Review | Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet Lipstick

My love for lipstick is well documented on this blog and recently I've been buying so many lip products I've run out of places to stash them (I clearly have a problem).

One of my recent buys was Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet Lipstick in Grand Cru - a beautiful red with strong pink undertones. It's one of 8 shades in total and was only £5 from Superdrug (it usually retails for £8.99). I'm not sure what attracted me to this lipstick masquerading as as gloss (the cost may have had a tiny bit to do with it) but it's full of a few welcome surprises.

It applies much like a gloss but the texture is like cake frosting - very light and airy - and it dries as a lipstick. The finish is matte but the lipstick formula is so smooth it doesn't crumble or dry out your lips. I love the staying power particularly which lasts really well throughout the day, though admittedly I have to really scrub my lips with makeup remover to eliminate all traces when I'm ready to take it off.

I struggle to get a defined lip-line with the gloss-style applicator and I found the edges of the lipstick feathered quite easily once on. As a result I prefer to use a liner with this lipstick and I've mostly been reaching for Barry M Lip Liner in 3, which I already had in my makeup stash and matches the colour of this lipstick perfectly. You can see how the lipstick looks without any lip liner below.

As you can see the result is quite soft around the edges but an intense pop of colour. The product is rather reminiscent of Lancome L'Absolu Velours (known as Creme de Mat in the US), which is similar in terms of texture and finish, but Bourjois' version is a fraction of the cost. I haven't been able to find much fault with this product so it's a great buy for me and in typical fashion I have a strong urge to buy the other 7 shades.

Have you tried Bourjois makeup?
