Wash Day | June 2014

I rarely do Wash Day posts, in fact I think it's been a year since I last did one. For the last two weeks my hair has not been responding to my favourite conditioners at all which made me really think about what I've been using on my hair.

I've been alternating between my JOICO regulars, Moisture Recovery and Smooth Cure, and Philip Kingsley Elasticizer Extreme too. These all usually work wonders but my hair has had that lack lustre feeling lately. No buttery softness, limited bounce, serious tangling and my hair just felt so dry.

What was going on? In truth it took me a while to realise as I've changed my conditioner every wash over the past couple of weeks. I also tried using different shampoos to remove any build-up as usually this can cause dryness, but still no change. It wasn't until eventually I thought about something I hadn't been doing lately with the warmer weather - pre shampoo treatments.

I applied Coconut oil all over my hair last week, using a lot more than usual as it helped me to detangle my new growth. I then applied a plastic cap and sat for 10 minutes. As soon as I started to shampoo my hair had changed immediately. The straw-like feeling had gone and the smoothness came back. Finally. I tried it again yesterday to ensure it wasn't just a fluke and after washing my hair felt so soft.

I usually can get away without the pre shampoo treatments in the summer, but I think I'll continue to keep doing them from now on to keep my hair happy. Jen's recent Wash Day post made me want to finish off my usual bun with some accessories, so after airdying I tied a scarf down lightly to keep my edges smooth.

What have you been doing to your hair lately?

  1. Hi Lesley, I noticed you don't use box braids or senegalese twists for protective styling. any particular reason why.

Also I feel like my hair hasnt been growing as fast as it does (my new growth seems to advance at a much slower rate than Im used to) Do you have any tips on products or things to try to stimulate hair follicles?

    1. Hi Clarita, I've only had braids twice ever and they were in the same year about 8 years ago. There's no particular reason I don't wear braids other than I prefer to have my own hair out, which is why I've never had a weave either.
You can try scalp massages, improving your diet or specially formulated products (like supplements or hair oils) for growth, but unless you're experiencing a particular problem with balding or traction alopecia your hair probably grows at the rate it's supposed to. If you're seeing no change in length you need to look at whether your ends are breaking off at the same rate your hair is growing. I hope this helps x

  3. Do you have a special technique for air drying your hair? Whenever I air dry the hair in the middle clumps together and my new growth is never smoothed like yours is in the picture. Also the moisture seems to evaporate half way through the process even though I use leave ins and moisturizers. Could you do a post on this perhaps? Thanks in advance

    1. I'll definitely try doing a post on how I airdry, it's nothing specialist - I usually leave my hair hanging down for as long as possible so the roots dry fully and then put it up into a bun x

    1. Thank you Eugenie! My hair is usually so much easier to care for in the summer but at the moment I'm having to keep up with my winter haircare regimen. I think it's where I have a lot of new growth at the moment and more texture in my hair at the top x
